CONSPIRACY: THE TRUE STORY OF THE FORT DIX FIVE
by huma yasin
Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for the law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself.. To declare that the government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal – would bring terrible retribution.
Justice Louis Brandeis
Olmstead v. United States, 1928
In her latest work, Conspiracy, author Huma Yasin employs the style of a political thriller to recreate a sixteen-month FBI sting in which two men – hired by the government in exchange for clemency for prior criminal behavior and legal immigration status – ingratiate themselves into a group of Muslim friends. Their “investigation” culminates in the arrest and subsequent trial of five Muslim men, three of whom are brothers, for conspiracy to murder military personnel at the Fort Dix Five base in New Jersey. Four of the five men are serving out their life sentences. Serdar Tatar, the fifth “co-conspirator.” received a thirty-three-year sentence, despite taking the extraordinary step to notify the FBI that the informant who’d been communicating with him was relentlessly pressuring him for a map of Fort Dix. Tatar told the FBI that he suspected the informant was part of a terrorist plot.
